The Reliable Road of Loving Allah and Loving the Messenger
Hazrat Hakeem ul Ummah Mujaddid ul Millah, Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) has said, “The only reliable method of loving Allah and loving the Messenger is that which is acquired through the Sunnah.” If this love is acquired in a method contrary to the Sunnah, either through drums or music etc, then this love and longing is not reliable. Allah has told His Beloved Messenger to proclaim the following,
“قل ان كنتم تحبون الله فاتبعوني ‘If you claim to love Allah, then follow (obey) me,”
“يحببكم الله” “Then Allah will love you.”
Hazrat Mawlana Fadhl ur Rahman Ganj Muradabadi would express it in the following manner, “Allah has announced through His Beloved Messenger that if you want to become the beloved of Allah, then walk my walk. Our Beloved Prophet is so lovely that whoever walks his walk will also become beloved to me.” Examine the love of this world like that of father and son. If a father sees a child in the neighborhood who resembles his own child, then the father also becomes beloved to Allah also. What is our situation today? We have forsaken the Sunnah and yet make claims of loving the Prophet! The Sahabah who toed the line in following the Prophet and who had been given the certificate of Allah’s pleasure, their road is the only reliable road. From this we can understand that the claim of love contrary to the method of the Sahabah is unreliable and unauthentic.

A Different Kind of Indulgence
The nafs of a human being is only concerned with attaining pleasure and enjoyment. The nourishment of the nafs is pleasure and enjoyment, but there is no specific form of pleasure and enjoyment that the nafs requires. It will not discriminate between this type of enjoyment and that type of enjoyment. It merely wants pleasure and enjoyment period. We have made the nafs addicted to evil enjoyments and pleasures, hence it fiends for these types of pleasures. Get it addicted just once to the obedience of Allah and the worship of Allah. There is nothing that matches up to Allah and so there is nothing that matches up to the pleasure derived from the worship and remembrance of Allah. Once the nafs becomes addicted to this type of pleasure and enjoyment, insha Allah, it will never go back to evil enjoyment.

Fulfillment of Rights
Hazrat Thanwi (RA) said:
“Sometimes involvement with the Qu’ran Shareef also becomes unlawful. For example: a man wishes to do Hifz but has the responsibility of providing for his family. It will be unlawful for such a man to involve himself with hifz of the Qur’an which is Mustahab, since it is his obligatory duty fardh-e-ayn to provide for his family.”
NOTE: This prohibition will only apply if involvement in the pursuit of Hifz results in the neglect of the Huqooq of one’s family. If a man possesses the ability to execute both tasks simultaneously, it will not be unlawful.
SubhanAllah. This shows the great status of fulfilment of rights of the fellow slaves and those who are under our guardianship and responsibility. Unfortunately, in our day and age, Deen has become a platform of fulfillment of fantasies, feeling a good vibe, and getting a name.
Many a time you see people whose household situation is such which is in dire need of spiritual, financial, or emotional support. There is no one else to look after the household affairs and be there for the assistance of the family. In that time of dire need you see that a person gets a sudden urge (out of nowhere) to go to study overseas, become the next Imam Ghazali, or go on an adventurous journey to seek out the Shaykh of his dreams who will make him the next Shaykh Abdul Qader Jaylani.
It should be understood well, that these types of sudden bursts of energy are nothing but a deception from shaytan. Shaytan knows that “I can never make the practicing believer drink wine, abandon salah, commit zina, etc. But I can deceive him into other such predicaments by which he becomes deprived of Allah’s mercy and grace, and eventually I make him a “bankrupt destitute” (as far as imaan and a`maal is concerned).
One of the ways shaytan makes a believer a “bankrupt destitute” is through mixing up priorities for him and making him become oblivious of his obligatory duties and magnifying the unnecessary actions. An example of this is a person who prays tahajjud all night and does zikr, and then sleeps through fajr prayer which is an absolute fardh.
He feels very pleased with his great feat of spirituality, but he doesn’t know that shaytan is laughing at him at that moment.
By this, he also becomes deprived of Allah’s mercy and grace and incredibly loses out spiritually, turning into a “bankrupt destitute” as it has mentioned extensively in the ahaadith.
It is mentioned in a famous and known hadith of Sahih Muslim:
Rasulullah (salallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Do you know who is the bankrupt destitute?” So the Sahabah (ridhwanullahi alaihim) answered, “He is the one who has no money and possessions.”
The Messenger of Allah (salallahu alaihi wa sallam) then said: “The bankrupt destitute of my Ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Judgmennt with lots of prayer, fasting and charity in his account. But he will come (in such a state) that he had abused a person physically, or slandered someone, or usurped the wealth of someone else, or shed the blood of someone, thus, each person will be given his due right on that Day from his good deeds to make up for the rights of theirs which he had violated. When all of his good deeds will be finished and wiped out before fulfilment of everyone’s due rights (which he had violated), then the people will cast their sins upon him, then he will be thrown headlong into the fire.”
Mullah Ali Qari (rahimahullah) comments on this hadith saying: “From this hadithh it is understood that in the matter of huququl-ibaad (due rights of the slaves), there is no pardon from Allah Ta`ala nor any intercession which will be accepted, unless He wishes to satisfy the opposing party which demands their rights. (Mirqatul Mafatih ; Vol. 9, pg. 314.)
May Allah Ta`ala save us from not fulfilling our rights which are due to others, and save us from oppression and grant us a correct understanding of our priorities in this path. Aameen.

Nurturing the Lovers of Allah
Tarbiyat-e-’Aashiqaan-e-Khuda
It has been an established principle for the seekers who tread the path to Allah that they inform their spiritual guide of their spiritual conditions and implement the advices they are given. In the path to Allah, this is an extremely essential right of the spiritual mentor, a means of reformation for seekers, and the adopted method of the friends of Allah.

Khwajah Sahib (RA) has mentioned:
چار شرطیں لازمی ہیں استفادہ کے لئے
اطلاع و اتباع و اعتقاد و انقیاد
Four conditions are necessary to attain complete benefit:
Informing, obedience, reliance and compliance
Someone once asked my beloved spiritual guide, Hazrat Mawlana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Sahib (DB), “What is the difference between obedience (اتباع) and compliance (انقیاد)?” So my Shaykh (DB) replied, “Obedience (اتباع) is to obey and commit externally, where a person implements every order of the shaykh. He imposes every advice of the shaykh upon himself. Whereas compliance (انقیاد ) is to obey and commit inwardly and submit, place trust in, and rely upon, and whole-heartedly accept from one’s heart, mind and soul the prescriptions and advices of the shaykh, and give no room whatsoever to one’s own opinions and views.
In the recent past, Hazrat Hakeem ul-Ummah, Mujaddid ul-Millah, Mawlana Shah Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA)’s students would write letters of reformation and Hazrat Thanwi (RA)’s replies were recorded and published and titled as Tarbiyat us-Saalik. This compilation is incomparable in its nature and people are deriving benefit from it to this day.
In the recent times, our beloved shaykh has taken on this responsibility. Hazrat (DB) has given replies and remedies to every spiritual disease and in particular the epidemic of our times; lustful glances and infatuations and its’ evil effects. Hazrat (DB) has given such rare pearls of wisdom regarding this destructful disease which are not to be found and are unprecedented in the history of Tasawwuf. The reason behind this is that this problem was not as widespread before as it is now. The work being taken from Hazrat in this field is without doubt the work that Allah takes from a reviver of the century. The reason being, that the concept of lowering the gaze has been so overlooked that people do not even consider lustful glances to be a sin anymore. Hazrat has taken this task upon himself to alert and inform the Ummah of its harms. It is for this very reason that senior scholars acknowledge that Hazrat is the reviver of guarding the gaze and the reviver of tasawwuf for this century. This statement is not yours or mine, but I have heard this from senior scholars of Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, England, South Africa and many others. Hazrat (DB)’s own achievements prove that he is the reviver of the 15th century. Also, the depth and detail by which Hazrat has explained the tricks and treacherous tactics of the nafs in regards to illicit infatuations and lustful glances and its cures and remedies, is not even found in the works of our pious predecessors because this is the epidemic of our times. Allah has, is, and Insha Allah will continue to benefit the Ummah through Hazrat (DB)’s work in this field. May Allah prolong Hazrat (DB)’s shadow of benefit over us continue his blessing till the Day of Judgment. Aameen!
The divinely inspired treatments that Hazrat (DB) has prescribed to many regarding the above mentioned disease, if compiled, it is hoped that it will prove beneficial as a guide for those to come. For this reason, in the monthly Al-Abrar, this has continued under the heading; Nurturing the Lovers of Allah, which is still continuing.
We request those who are connected to Hazrat (DB) that these types of letters be copied and sent to the Khanqah. Confidentiality shall definitely be maintained.
The book which can be downloaded from the Khanqah’s website (http://www.khanqah.org/books/show/tarbiyat-e-ashiqan-e-khuda) is a published version of what has been gathered from Al-Abrar with the same name. I pray that Allah accept this work from the compilers, and anyone who has contributed in any way, shape or form. Aameen!

From Beyond the Heart
Due to the infinite wisdom of Allah, I had fallen really ill late last night. Living where I live, I have no family close by. By the grace of Allah, I feel that I have been granted something far greater, i.e. students who care for my well being. All day today and even during the night, they have been “lecturing” me about how I need to look after my health etc. In fact, one of them was willing to go as far as to forcefully drop me home so I can rest.
I have no blood relation with these people, but we do have is mutual love for one another for the sake of Allah. It is the love of Allah that binds us together. These people care so much for me that I cannot express it in words. In fact, vocabulary is deficient in its ability to express my true inner feelings.
I realize that I have many deficiencies when it comes to Deen and Dunya, but I desire and expect nothing but the best from my students. I see them to be a means of my salvation in the hereafter. I myself have nothing to present in the court of Allah. I just hope that these students of mine serve as a means of my salvations. If Allah asks me what I have brought, I will just hopefully present them.
Their behavior today made me realize how unworthy I am, and how kind Allah is, that He has put me in the midst of such people who care so much who are willing to go out of there way for a stubborn sinner like myself. My earnest request to anyone who reads this or benefits from this blog, is that they please make dua’ for me, but also make dua’ for my students who are an inspiration for me. Pray to Allah that He makes us all amongst the Awliyaa Siddiqeen. Aameen!
