Increase and Decrease in the Love for the Shaikh
Once a person wrote to Hazrat Thanwi (RA), “Sometimes the love I have for you increases and other times it decreases. So could you advise to recite some wazifah so that my love for you remains on the rise all the time?” Hazrat Thanwi (RA) asked him in the reply, “Does you love for Allah remain constant, or does it fluctuate?” The mureed wrote back, “It fluctuates.” Hazrat Thanwi (RA) then replied, “The shaikh does not have more rights than Allah. Therefore, do not worry too much about the level of love for the shaikh, but still one should make dua’ to Allah that He grants you love for your shaikh.”

Subhanallah, some people ask, “What is all this love of shaikh… love of shaikh…. love of shaikh! what about love of Allah?! These sufism people just talk about their shaikhs…”
But this statement lacks understanding of deen and recognition of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihis wa sallam)because love of the pious people, love of those who teach us the path to Allah, and love of those who love Allah was something which was asked for by the Messenger of Allah himself.
The du’a is mentioned in Bukhari, “Allahumma inni as’aluka hubbak, wa hubba may-yuhibbuk, wa hubba amalin yuballghuni ila hubbik…”
“O Allah, I ask of You to grant me Your love, and the love of those who love You, and and the love of those actions which will bring me to Your love.”
Hazratwala (damat barakatuhum) said, “That person who does not ask for the love of the pious people (the shaikh who is the one who guides one to Allah, will obviously be included in this category) then he is devoid of understanding the mizaaj-e-nubuwwat and the zauq-e-nubuwwat (the temperament and disposition of prophethood).
