“Hazrat, Fear Allah!”
In the khanqah (spiritual center) of Hazrat Thanwi (RA), there was an appointed custodian who would make sure that things are in order and everything is in its proper place. There were at any given time, many guests who would come to visit Hazrat Thanwi (RA) at the khanqah. A few of these guests were not well aware of how particular they were required to be to such an extent that even their shoes, sandals, or slippers were meant to be put in the shoe rack. The custodian would often put other people’s shoes on the racks for them in case they forgot to do so. After some time passed, the custodian expressed his displeasure to those who would not adhere to putting their shoes on the racks as was understood. After this incident, a few guests went to Hazrat Thanwi (RA) and complained that the custodian is scolding us unnecessarily. Hazrat Thanwi (RA) then went to the custodian and scolded him and mentioned to him that he is not there to boss people around. The custodian heard what Hazrat Thanwi (RA) had to say then immediately after, he replied, “Hazrat, fear Allah!” Upon hearing this, Hazrat Thanwi (RA) put his head down in humility, said, “Astaghfirullah.” (I seek Allah’s forgiveness), and went to his room. Later that day in a general gathering, Hazrat Thanwi (RA) publicly asked the custodian to forgive him for not hearing his side of the story before scolding him. The custodian felt ashamed that he had put his shaykh in such a position and apologized.
