Q&A: Solutions to Your Spiritual Diseases

We are very pleased to announce that by the taufeeq of Allah Ta`ala, through this An-Noor blog, Allah Ta`ala has helped us start up this Q&A section which allows people who are connected to this Silsilah, who would like to get connected, and/or those who would like to take on the path of sulook to Allah Ta`ala, to express their spiritual ailments and get remedy and advice from mujaazeen—scholars who have been given Khilaafah and Ijaazah (license and permission) in the path of spirituality by Hazrat Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Sahib (DB), who was the special attendant of Maulana Shah Muhammad Ahmad Sahib Pratabgadhi Naqshbandi (RA), and Shah Abdul Ghani Phulpuri (RA) and the khalifah of Maulana Shah Abrar-ul-Haq (RA), the latter two were Khalifahs of Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA). Hazrat Thanwi (RA) was a khalifah of Hazrat Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki (RA), who had Ijaazat and Khilaafat in all four silsilahs/tareeqahs.

Alhamdulillah, this legacy of Hakim ul Ummah Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) is still being carried on through the blessings and efforts of our Shaikh, Hazrat Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Sahib (daamat barakaatuhum).

Many a time, people who decide to tread the path of sulook and tasawwuf by connecting themselves to a shaikh have the notion that they will magically reach the status of wilayah (friendship and closeness to Allah) merely through their connection and link with their shaikh. This is an absolutely erroneous and misleading notion because the duty of the shaikh is simply to show and be a guide to the path, not to carry the mureed on his back. The mureed must traverse the path to Allah Ta`ala himself and get guidance from the shaikh along the way.

Our beloved Shaikh, Hazrat Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Sahib (daamat barakaatuhum) has said that there are two main foundations of this path of tasawwuf (derived from the Qur`an):

1.) Suhbat: Adopting the company of the pious:

واصبر نفسك مع الذين يدعون ربهم بالغدوة والعشيِّ يريدون وجهه…

“…And withhold yourself (in the company) of those who remember their Lord, morning and evening desiring His Sublime Being…” (Surah Kahf: 28 )

2.) Mujaahadah: Struggling to Fight the Nafs:

والذين جاهدوا فينا لنهدينهم سبلنا…

“And (as for) those who strive hard (struggle) for Us, We will most certainly guide them to our paths….” (Surah Ankabut: 69)

Thus, the essence of tasawwuf is to struggle to acquire islaah-e-nafs (rectification of the character) through the company of a qualified shaikh.

Rectification of one’s character consists of beautifying oneself with akhlaq-e-Muhammadiyya (the prophetic characteristics and morals), and ridding oneself of akhlaq-e-radhilah (evil, satanic traits).

Thus, if a person wants to acquire the essence and objective of tasawwuf he must endeavor to rectify his character more than anything else. The method for this is to have an islaahi ta`alluq (a reformative connection) with one’s shaikh.

Someone wrote to Hazrat Hakimul Ummah saying, “I do not know the way to rectify myself and acquire “islaah-e-nafs”. I am totally ignorant of this matter. Please, for the sake of Allah, advise me in this matter.”

Hazrat Thanwi’s reply: “The method is that you should write to me your spiritual ailments one by one and ask me for their remedies. I will prescribe the appropriate remedy and after practically implementing that remedy you must inform me of your condition.”

(Tarbiyat us Salik; Vol.2 Pg. 20)

The islaahi-letters are letters which a mureed writes to his shaikh to inform the shaikh of his spiritual state and, in turn, get remedy and advice from the shaikh to rectify his condition.

There are four conditions which Hazrat Hakim ul Ummat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) mentioned that one needs in order to benefit from having a Shaikh, otherwise making an islahi connection is just another custom for the sake of name or show.

And you will hear people proudly boasting, “I’m bay’ah to such and such Shaikh…” or “I have an islahi ta`alluq with so and so..” but when you see their akhlaaq and a’maal and life, there is no special difference in their life in comparison to someone else’s life who is not linked to a Shaikh…The reason for this is that there is no islaahi activity taking place, whether it be suhbat or islaahi letters or mashwara of one’s condition via letters, email, or on the phone, etc.

Those 4 conditions are:

(1) (اطلاع) TO INFORM THE SHAIKH OF YOUR SPIRITUAL CONDITION. This is mainly done through the islaahi letters, etc.

(2) (اتباع) TO FOLLOW THE SHAIKH’S ADVICE.

(3) (اعتماد) TO RELY UPON THE ADVICE AND COUNSEL OF THE SHAIKH.

(4) (انقياد) TO FIRMLY ADHERE AND IMPLEMENT WHATEVER THE SHAIKH ADVISES ONE TO DO FOR ONE’S REFORMATION.

All these points are directly connected with suhbat of the Shaikh and/or the islaahi-letters.

Some people make the excuse of not writing to the Shaikh saying they have a difficult time “expressing” themselves in writing. The solution to this is easy, and that is: you don’t need to “express” yourself and write your entire autobiography; all you need to do is write your spiritual condition, i.e. what is wrong with you and what wrong you are involved in, similar to the manner in which you tell a doctor how you are feeling, or what is bothering you.

Here is an example:

HAAL (spiritual condition):

Respected Shaikh, Assalaamu alaikum…

For a long time now, I just do not have the ability to control my gaze. However much a try, I still fail in controlling my eyes. Any woman that passes by, I glance at her lustfully. Please counsel me as to how to save myself from this disease.

Wassalaam,

(insert name here)

The example reply to this is as follows:

REPLY AND REMEDY:

Wa alaikumus salaam…. The statement you made about not having the “ability” to control your gaze is incorrect. It is a known fact and an established principle of human nature that, if a person has the ability look, then he definitely has the ability not to look. If he has the ability to sin, then he definitely has the ability not to sin.

The fact of the matter is that you are not using that God-given ability. Hazrat Hakim ul Ummat Thanwi (RA) said: “There is no other remedy for the disease of continuous sinning (whether it be casting evil and lustful glances or any other sin) except to do three things:

1. To use your Himmah God-given inner-strength. Have courage and face your “fears”… that fear that “what if I don’t look at her… what will happen if I lower my gaze? If I leave sinning then I will get bored and go into depression… maybe I should go slowly into deen or else I won’t be able to handle it. I’m still young and strong… what a waste of my youth….”

These are all whisperings of shaytaan, who wants you to delay with these childish and cowardly excuses so that your heart totally becomes black in sinning which will lead to never being able to make taubah again.

Tell yourself, “I CAN DO IT… SINNING IS NOT GOOD FOR ME… IF SINS WERE GOOD, THEN WHY DID ALLAH FORBID IT? SINS ARE CANDY-COATED POISON….“

SINS ARE LIKE AN ITCH, IT FEELS REALLY GOOD TO SCRATCH IT, BUT AFTER YOU’RE DONE AND YOUR SKIN IS RIPPED UP AND BLEEDING, THEN IT DOESN’T FEEL GOOD ANYMORE.

Tell yourself, “I will not use this body which Allah created for His obedience to commit sin and live the life of a disobedient servant. O Nafs! This body does not belong to you! It belongs to Allah, so don’t exploit it to whatever shaytaan tells you to do.”

Use your Himmah. Be strong, fight your nafs and say that you can.

2. The second remedy to continuous sinning is to pray to Allah Ta`ala to help you use that Himmah and ability He granted and to take you away from a life of sin.

3. The third remedy is to ask the pious servants of Allah Ta`ala to make dua for you so that you use the ability to stay away from sin.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT POINT:

These letters should strictly contain questions about spiritual diseases and their remedies. If however there is a mas’alah (Deeni question) related to one’s spiritual disease then there is no harm in mentioning it.

How many problems should I mention?

You should mention only one spiritual disease or problem at a time… when you get the answer to one, practice on the advice given for a week or two weeks, then write back whether you benefited or not, in this way, you continue to the next one and the next, and so on…

What if I have no spiritual haal?

If you have no spiritual condition, and feel like you are in a spiritual slump…. then you just mention this:

“Respected Shaikh, I have no spiritual haal at the moment. Please make du’a that Allah Ta’ala rectifies my character and grants me the Imaan and Yaqeen of His beloved servants…

Wassalaam…”

Hazrat Maulana Hakeem Akhtar Sahib (daamat barakaatuhum) mentioned that as long as this letter remains (with the shaikh’s dua in it) then Allah Ta’ala will continue to shower down blessings upon you…. even if the shaikh has passed away, the words of his du’as are preserved on paper.

May Allah Ta`ala give us the ability to value and benefit from this great opportunity.

Aameen!

    • Bismihi Ta’ala,
      Assalaamu’alaikum,

First of all, as far as adhkaar are concerned, just be punctual with whatever daily adhkaar you already do and make sure you also recite the Qur’an daily. Beyond that, this is an issue of your will-power and not that of adhkaar and litanies.

The most important advice in this matter is that you should not use the internet at all beyond necessity. If you do not absolutely need to use the internet, then do not use it. When there is a need to use it, go to a library or public place. Remember, only do this when there is a need, otherwise just avoid it period. Even when it comes to Islamic websites, only visit them when you are using the internet at a public place.

Beyond this, even for your computer that you own, download and install an internet filter/parental control program on there. For the password, have someone else put in a password that is unknown to you. Remember, your personal computer should not even be used for the internet unless there is an absolute necessity and then too it should only be used in a public place such as a library. This will be an extra line of defense even if you get tempted to browse such websites in a public place, which is unlikely.

These advices may be difficult and inconvenient but if you truly wish to put an end to this issue, you will need to strictly abide by them.

May Allah Ta’ala make us all amongst the Saliheen.

      Wassalaam

    Dear Hazrat,

I had 2 questions in mind and I was hoping that you can answer them.

    – When mentioning one’s spiritual condition to the Shaykh, is it proper to mention a specific sin that one indulges in, in order to properly explain/clarify one’s spiritual state?

    – In order to remain polite with one’s Shaykh or teacher, is it proper to send a letter/email solely to thank the Shaykh? What about a letter/email solely sent to ask the Shaykh for his Du’as?

    May Allah (SWT) reward you

    • Anonymous Says:

      Wa ‘Alaykum Assalaam

      – It is proper to mention the specific sin or even the generality of that particular sin, so that the Shaykh will know how to properly treat it.

      – Yes, both things are proper and preferable. This will help develop a stronger bond and relationship with the Shaykh as well.

May Allah allow us to benefit from our Mashaikh immensely.

      Dear Junaid,
      Wa ‘Alaykum Assalaam

Masha Allah, it’s good that you are acknowledging this as a bad habit and that it needs reformation. Without taking this first step, one cannot attain proper help.

To answer your question, the best thing would be for you to use the internet in a public place whenever necessary. For example, use it in a place where there is a lot of traffic flow of people (such as living room, family room, kitchen etc). Don’t use it in a private place like your bedroom or anywhere in solitude. When there is that sense of feeling that someone may see you and you will obviously be ashamed of it, then it will prevent you from going onto those sites in the first place. Secondly, only use the internet when it is necessary. Don’t browse or surf the net just to pass time because eventually you may stumble upon something which will lead to other things and sins. Furthermore, if you still end up going onto those sites, stipulate a fine for yourself, such an amount where it becomes burdensome on you and your nafs, and give it for sadaqa. For example, if giving $5 to sadaqah becomes a burden for you, then pay that amount each time you look at something unlawful. Eventually your nafs will get tired of committing this unlawful act.

Lastly, the main thing to do is to have himmah or courage to fight this sexual desire. Without this struggle, it will become very hard for one to reform this habit. You will soon see the benefits and blessings of Allah descend onto you every time you fight these unlawful desires. Also, read “The 14 Harms to Casting Evil Glances” on the khanqah website at http://www.khanqah.org. It is available in both english and urdu, whatever is easier for you.

May Allah give us the tawfeeq and courage to fight those unlawful desires that lead to His displeasure.

    • Bismihi Ta’ala,
      Wassalaam,

The coming and going of states such as these are quite natural for the seeker at the outset of his or her spiritual journey. Do not become disheartened or disappointed at the discontinuation of spiritual highs and the onset of undesirable emotional states. With renewals of determination, steadfast efforts, supplications to Allah Ta’ala, and constancy in dhikr and recitation of the Qur’an, these occurrences decrease over time until eventually a stable state is reached.

Often, the humility and self-worthlessness that ensues is a catalyst to propel the seeker along the path.

  30. Help needed Says:

    Assalamu ‘alaykum warahmtullah,

I am 22 years old and am living in the UK.
2 years ago, I experienced something vtremendous which changed me.
I can only describe it as being very aware of being watched by Allah swt not just in actions but also in my thoughts.
I have heard the phrase ‘being in the presence of Allah swt’. Although I am ignorant of the reality, id did feel as though this was the case with me.

I would make constant zikr and feel very close to Allah. I could recognize very clearly the thoughts of my nafs and I felt as though I had to spend every secodn and minute of my life behaving properly in front of Allah.

Telling yourself Allah is watching you and knows your thoughts is one thing.
Knowing it with certainty and actually feeling it is completely different.

I believe I have become so corrupt in these two years that I am the verge on being ruined. I can barely remeber Allah swt in my salah, and I think because of my arrogance and terible evil beahviour with Allah swt, I have become cursed.

‘wa may ya;shu an zikr rabihi nuqayyid lahu shaytan fahuwa lahu qareen.’

    WHt ashould I do?

    • Bismihi Ta’ala,
      Asalaamu’alaikum,

You should strive to maintain a level of concentration in your 5 daily prayers. One way of doing this is to memorize the meanings of those things which you recite often in Salah. You should then focus on the meaning of each word as you are reciting it. This will inshaAllah be a means of increasing concentration therein.

Furthermore, it is imperative to be punctual in your daily recitation of Qur’an and your adhkaar. This is one of the key tools by which spiritual progress is attained and it demands that a person be extremely routine in carrying it out. Not a single day should go by wherein the recitation of the Qur’an and/or adhkaar are left out.

Ultimately, an easy catalyst to bring about this change in one’s life is the company of the righteous. Seek good company and spend as much time as you can with them. If and when you cannot be in the company of the righteous, suffice by reading about them, reading their writings, and/or listening to their discourses. InshaAllah with all of these things in mind, you will soon see progress.

May Allah Ta’ala make us all amongst his ‘Arifeen.

      Wassalaam

    Assalamu ‘alaykum Brother Mustafa,

“How can I become a salik without a Shaykh? Please help.”

From the teachings of our Shaykh, we have learned that to be a salik is possible, but not preferable.

It is like the one who reads everything there is to know about medicine or carpentry or anything of that sort, but doesn’t practice on it with a person who’s already experienced in the field. For example, for medicine, one can learn all there is to know through books, however, unless he does his rotations or residency, he will never know how to actually cure a patient first hand. He won’t know Similarly, a person who wants to attain Allah, he can only go to one who has already attained Him, and let that person (the shaykh) be the one to guide you towards Him. Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I’ve been depressed all my life, from a very young age. The depression is chronic but eases & worsens in intensity during phases that come & go without apparent reason.

In general I’m miserable, sick, lost and irritable all the time.. feel like I have no capacity for anything good within me. My mind, heart, senses and sometimes even body feels numb. Have fluctuating moods, extreme lethargy, indifference and a disturbing lack of motivation to do anything.. all easy things have become impossibly difficult.

I’m trying to correct the shortcomings I perceive within myself, but my strength & efforts are weak & sporadic and.. still can’t understand what is wrong with me.

    What would you advise?

Jazak Allah khair for offering this service.

As we have been taught by our Shaykh, when one suffers from waswasas, one should not try to fight them off, rather, one should read the following:

      1. Ta’awwuz – A’oozu billahi min as Shaytaan ir rajeem, after this, read:
      2. Aamantu billahi wa rusulihi, this should be read an odd number of times.

Sahabat ra are our examples for our rectification. Hadrat Muhammad SAW made effort on their hearts on iman bil ghaib for 13 years. When effort of iman was made, all commandments of Allah SWT was readily obeyed ( Solat, hijab, taqwa etc was established by all sahabat/sahabiah)
Imam Malik rah.said reformation of the last part of this ummat ( of Muhammmad SAW ) will not be possible except by adopting the method which was used in the beginning by Hadrat Muhammad SAW.
Hence, effort of iman & amal should be done by all muslims by means of dakwah & tabligh. This is the commandment of Allah for this Ummat because there’s no Rasul be sent till the day of Qiyamat.

It is said to be guided, one has to “seek guidance”. How does one seek guidance? what does he have to do other than making dua? Is there a special process to follow?

    • Pearl Says:

      Wa ‘Alaykum Assalam,

As we have been taught by our Shaykh, one should continue to make du’a for guidance while simultaneously take certain steps in that direction. There is no particular process to follow, but one can start by connecting him or herself to the pious people in one’s area. By this I mean, to stay and benefit from their company, make an effort to learn about the Deen, make mashwarah with the pious people regarding one’s affairs of life.

  45. Assalam-o-alaikum!!

My Dear Hazrat Nabeel Sahab DB. Hazrat Molana Tameem Sahab Db . well, a Christian has asked me a question which i am unable to answer. would you people please???

    The Question is :

I have studied on my own the mystical path and considered myself a “gnostic” for a long time since I was raised in the “Christian” myth. I came to mysticism late in life and through seeking God; the fist time I was aware of the presence of the One I was afraid. In fact, the first year that the One signaled me in various ways, I was spooked and could not tell others how hard it was to accept that if one listened, the Divine would speak.

Over the last few years I have read many of the collections of Sufi teaching stories and sayings and find that I am more comfortable with the Sufi views. I understand that most Sufi believe that one may not fuse with God without a human guide and that one who, like me, has no access to a Sufi community may never “become a Sufi”.

    Do you believe this?

    Respectfully, Joseph

    Assalam alaikum,

I hope you are in the best of spirits!!

1]I would like to know how the spiritual development differs between men/women, Jinn/Hermaphrodites!?! are we all different due to our spiritual potential/inherent natures or are their similarities ie as jinn are made from smokeless fire will their spiritual sickness[s] involve having a angry temper, or women more from backbiting/lying or men with greed and envy!?

2] If shaikh prescribes something does the mureed have to carry it out otherwise he wont spiritually develop or if the mureed is asked to come to the spiritual centre ie Shaikhs home for spiritual development but doesn’t will the mureeds condition not then improve!?

3] If a normal person sees a shaikh in his/her dream and baith is done ie by the shaykh asking the mureed or the mureed pledging himself to the sheikh does this mean that he will be more blessed than a person who in real life pledges himself to the shaykh without being asked or is asked by the shaykh then does baith!?

4]When the shaykh gives food to his mureed ie dates/asian metai what does this symbolise!? is the food a symbol of a virtue/divine blessing the shaykh is giving to the mureed or is it just goodwill/civility!?

5] If shaykh advises his mureed something ie the mureed doesn’t love his wife and is not happy with and asks the shaykh his opinion!? but the shaykh says to stick with the marriage despite the hardship the mureed is under!? if the mureed then divorces his wife would he be under divine wrath or wont be able to spiritually develop!?

6] Why is it important the the mureed be in wudhu during the baith ceremony!?

7] My wazifa’s at the moment are 111 durood shareef daily [sallalahoo ala habibihee sayyidina muhummadin waleehi wassalam] 31 times surah fatiha, 71 times surah ikhlas, 313 times ya hayyo ya qayoom and 111 times ya rahmunu ya raheemu, what do these signify and how do they help in alleviating my spiritual sicknesses I also read an extra 100 times surah fatiha!! you can be open about the affliction of my soul

    Assalaamalaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu,

I have a question or rather I want your opinion on if I am right or wrong, and if I am wrog then what should be the right way.

I am 26 years old male, unmarried. I am studying in the university in Evening. I am doing Masters. My family is not very religious, only my mother and I offer namaz regularly. Even she is relgious to a superficial extent. None of them know and understand day to day problems and Shariah rulings. They want me to get married after I complete my Masters (that will be almost two years more) and work for two years, this is a total of 4 years. They don’t let me work and say that it is going to affect my studies. I have an elder brother who is married and a younger sister who is unmarried.

My problem is that in this day and age it is very difficult to remain chaste while being unmarried.

I had this idea that I would approach my friends who are reliable and pious, and will ask them to request their parents to seek a pious and purdah observing girl who has a lion heart so that she may be steadfast in the face of sinning environment of my home. Then my friend’s parents can bring the proposal saying that they know me and think this proposal as suitable.

Please let me know soon as I am very perplexed as it is extremely hard to protect my chastity in this environment, especially in the open and vulgar environment of university. The big problem is that I cannot even run away from my home as I cannot stand breaking my parents hearts after so much they have done for me.

    Please help!

    Abdullah.

As far as your wudhu problem and wasawis are concerned, there is question about this which has already been answered above… please refer to it.

As far as your feeling really cold in prayer… you first have to tell us whether this is just a physical coldness. Or do you feel some emotional anxiety or feeling at the time of prayer also? It could be due to some emotional state that you go into, which in turn makes you shiver. Is this the effect of something you are feeling or is it just that you have no feelings and you just start getting cold at salah time?

    Please elucidate…

    Assalamu Alaikum,

Jazak’ Allah for sharing this knowledge.

I have a problem as of late, and I was wonderinf if someone can help me or advise me of a *cure* or *solution.*

For the past couples of years, I have been very adamant about my prayer. I mean, I have always prayed my 5 daily prayers, but in the past years I have been very *conscious* of my wudu. I would some times do it over out of fear that I may have had a dry spot left (I know it is wasting water, but I can’t help myself). And during prayer, I would say ayahs over and over again out of fear my tajweed was in correct and sometimes I would redo my prayer because I tripped when getting up to do the next rakah (so I figured my prayer wasn’t good). So many times, it would take me over a half an hour to do one of my 5 daily prayers.

Anyway, the past couple months I have had a *new* problem with my prayers. I get really cold during prayer. I would have to pray with a coat and gloves (even if it is a 110 degrees). Some times, I would even shiver in my prayers (and people watching me would ask if I am shaking). I have no medical problems, but it gets very difficult for me to pray. (I know it sounds weird but,) what should I do?

    Jazak’ Allah.

  60. Abu Yahya Says:

    Asalamu Alaikum:

Slight despondency which comes in the heart of a person due to one’s rights not being fulfilled is a natural tendency of a human being and it is not bad to have this “slight despondency”.

Allah Ta`ala has made the fulfilment of our fellow brothers’ and sisters’ rights waajib because of this very reason. So that we do not hurt each other in any way and make each other despondent.

If we were not to become despondent and sad when our rights are being trampled, then there would be no need for Allah Ta`ala to necessitate the fulfilment of others’ rights. It would be no big deal.

Actually that person who does not become effected when his rights, or other people’s rights are being neglected, lacks ghayrat and a sense of esteem.

Allah Ta`ala has not commanded us to be passive and careless in regards to our rights or the rights of others. Allah Ta`ala has even overlooked the utterance of bad words for the one who has been wronged and oppressed.

“Allah does not like evil words to be said openly, except from the one who has been wronged…” (Nisa: 147)

If a person has faced unjust attitude from someone, it is allowed for him to complain and open his mouth. (Within the bounds of shariah)

This is totally different from expecting other things from people and wanting them to treat you a certain way because you think yourself to be deserving of respect or something. This is not right.

If you have done a good thing for someone, then know that Allah Ta`ala is the sole COMPENSATOR for all deeds. No human being has the ability to truly pay someone else back in reality.

Know that in the end of the day, deeds are for Allah. Even if we give a gift to a brother or sister… then one should think to themself…. why have i given this? The real objective and correct answer should be: so that Allah Ta`ala becomes pleased. Not that he should pay us back or also get us a gift in return.

Allah Ta`ala has mentioned the quality of the people of Jannah that they used to:

“…give food, OUT OF THEIR LOVE FOR ALLAH, to the needy, and the orphan, and the captive, (saying to them): ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah, we have no intention of receiving either a return or thanks.” (Surah ad-Dahr: 7-9)

May Allah Ta`ala grant us this reality and make us amongst the MUKHLASEEN. Ameen.

  61. taalibah Says:

All effort is being made to perform all actions only for the love and pleasure of Allah, and fulfill ones own obligations towards Allah and that of His creation solely for his pleasure, but occasionally a slight despondancy creeps in when ones own obligations and rights arent fulfilled by others, how should one counsel oneself into fully grasping the concept of ‘ikhlas’ so one does not fall in the trap of holding expectations in return from others, and feeling imense pain when they are not returned?

Thank you for your answer! It is very helpful for me. When I do intention to do only faraid and wajibat I feel that waswasa comes out and feel myself very easy. But when I do that I feel that I am not muslim and I don’t believe in Allahu Tagala (aguzubillah) and with this thinking I live few days. But after this I understand that in the most situation I seek for help from Allah, I fear Allah and I understand that I know that Muhammadan way – is the best way.
Nevertheless, when I must do wudu – I feel that I can’t do that, that I can’t control that water come to all points of limb, that when I do wudu start wind passings and I must do it many many times and in result I image that I can’t do my salah and wudu fast and miss very important wordly affairs.
And, in the most time I feel that if I do some ibada, I miss very important thigs to my wordly affairs and this is destroy me, everything will be terrible. I know that I must fear only Allah and from him only wait rizk but I feel this pain.
    What should I do?

  67. Abu Yahya Says:

    Wa alaikumus salam:

If you do suffer from similar problems then it is highly recommended that you only temporarily “postpone” your nawafil and zikr till you become a little bit more stable. Even if it might be throughout the mubarak month of Ramadhan.

Postpone means that you will commence your azkaar as soon as you feel spiritually/mentally/physically better, inshallah.

Even though the heart feels sad of missing the great rewards of performing nawafil in the blessed month of Ramadhan, this is a good thing because it is sign of true imaan. But remember your health is the most important thing.

Another thing the nafs makes us do is belittle the fara’idh, wajibaat, and sunan mau’akkadah which in themselves contain an immense level of reward and barakah. This matter is explicit in the numerous ahaadith which have been mentioned in this regard.

Actually in fiqhi terms, the sunan mu`akkadah fit under the category of nawafil. So in this way you will not be deprived of the rewards of nawafil prayers if you follow this remedy inshallah.

As for Ramadhan being a month of worship. The fasting during the day and the taraweeh during the night is more than sufficient worship as Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has told us:

“He who fasts the month of Ramadhan with faith and hope for the reward, all his sins previous sins will be forgiven. And he who stands up the nights of Ramadhan with faith and hope for the reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.”

If a person really has a serious waswasa condition and is spiritually unstable, then it is very important that he should not overwhelm himself with nawafil.

There is a principle mentioned in Islamic Jurisprudence and that is: Daf’ul Madharrah, Aulaa min Jalbil Man’fa’ah. To ward away harm is better than attainment of benefit.

If you apply this rule to our situation at hand, you will see that a person preserving his health and warding away spiritual and emotional breakdown by which he can comfortably perform his faraa’idh and wajibaat is better than over-exerting himself in nawafil for attaining some thawab by which he might hurt himself and eventually not be able to even perform his faraa’idh. If he does this, he will become sinful and questioned for his negligence in this regard. Because we were never commanded to perform nawafil, we were commanded to perform the fara’idh and advised and encouraged to perform the nawafil.

And if performance of nawafil will lead us to becoming lax or missing our obligatory duties then the nawafil should be postponed or delayed for a time in which we can handle both.

May Allah Ta`ala grant us all the proper understanding.

  68. A Says:

    Salam,

I suffer from similar problems as above where i am not in a stable condition.

If All Nafl Zikr is stopped until a person is stable, what do they do in Ramadhan, as its the month of worship?

    Jazakallah

  69. Abu Yahya Says:

The only cure to wasaawis (stray thoughts) is that you pay no attention to them.

Continue to pray your 5 times prayers even though you get these wasaawis, feel chained-up and get a headache. By doing this you will attain double rewards. One is the reward of the salah itself and secondly the reward of mujahadah and struggling for Allah Ta`ala.

As for all other wazifas and zikrs other than faraa’iz, waajibat, sunan mu`akkadah, you must postpone them until you are spiritually stable. Don’t do any zikrs and over-burden yourself. Do not make any deep meditations and muraqabahs.

Try to stay away from mentally stressful activity and anxiety. Try to be around pious people who are light-hearted and easy-going.

Make sure you are getting at least 6 hours of sleep daily.

A lot of sufis on this path over-burden themselves with heavy muraqabahs and zikrs and depressing states of being too serious and hard on themselves and this eventually causes them to get a psychological break-down. Which leads to spiritual break down.

Hazratwala (damat barakatuhum) says, “This is a time of stress and anxiety, thus we need to counter this with light-heartedness and an effort to stay happy. Stay with pious friends who will make you feel happy and tell a couple of good jokes to lighten your spirit. Eat good, sleep good, be happy. All tasawwuf is: is that you should not displease your Beloved Allah.”

Tasawwuf is not that you should become walking zombie… Not smiling, not happy, boring attitude, depressed, sick, and in a pitiful state affairs. Was this the sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)? Or was he alive, healthy, welcoming, and good charactered?

When you make wudhu, just fulfil the 4 fara’iz: washing the face, the arms up to the elbows, wiping the head and washing the feet up to the ankles, and get out of there.

You should be all done and gone in 3-4 minutes. If you still get wasaawis and shaytan tells you that your wudhu is not done then tell him, “Khabeeth shaytaan mardood… leave me alone with my Allah… I have fuflilled what my Allah has mentioned in His Quran. Why do you care about my wudhu and prayer?! If He accepts it, then well and good and if He doesn’t, then I have obeyed His command. Now leave me!”

Read ayatul kursi after every prayer.

Please follow up and let us know of your progress.

    Jazakallahu Khair in advance.

  78. Abu Yahya Says:

Q1.) How can i increase my tawakkul in Allah and also be pleased with his decree whatever the outcome? What can i do to increase this within me?

    Answer:

Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi rahimahullah has advised that to attain Tawakkul one should:

1.) Have trust in his promise (which He has stated in the Qur`an Majeed: “And he who trusts in Allah, then Allah will suffice for him.” Ponder over this verse and apply it.)

2.) (Reflect over your previous achievements in life and how Allah Ta`ala was sufficient and fulfilled your needs for you when you relied on Him.) And if there were no such times in your life as such, then ponder over how Allah Ta`ala sufficed for His Khalil Ibrahim (alaihis salam) and His Habib Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). (Taleemud Deen)

The mashayikh also write: any easy way to attain tawakkul is to know with full conviction that all things are in the control of Allah. Life and death are in His control, happiness and sadness, sickness and health, poverty and affluence, calamities and comforts, and the hearts of mankind. And Khwajah Azizul Hasan Majzub (rahmatullahi alaihi) said:

جب تو ميرا، تو سب ميرا، فلك ميرا، زمين ميرى
اور اكر اك تو نهين ميرا، تو كوى شي نهين ميرى

When You are mine, then all is mine, the heavens are mine, the earth is mine,

And when I do not have You, then nothing is mine.

3.) Ponder over the verse of the Quran Majeed: “Say, ‘Never shall we be afflicted except with that which Allah has decreed for (our benefit)… He is our Guardian and Protector.”

Q2) How can i learn patience at time of calamities to avoid anger, frustration. How can i control my anger, remove frustration, destroy pride, arrogance, ego, in general

    Answer:

Hazrat Thanwi rahimahullah writes that an easy way to tolerate difficulties and calamities is that one should just ponder that Allah will most definitely reward me for my patience and acceptance and reliance on Him… in this way the most difficult tasks and hardships become very easy.

Q3.) If i place trust in Allah in all matters including calamities, should i pray for the end of the calamity or pray for sabr?

    Answer:

You should pray to Allah Ta`ala, thus: “O my beloved Allah! You know that I am your weak and feeble servant. Unfortunately because of my weakness I cannot withstand hardships and calamities. So O my beloved Allah, please remove this calamity from me. And if you wish to test me through this calamity, then grant me sabr and contentment in Your wise decree. For indeed, anything You decree is for our benefit.”

Q4) If Allah removes all blessings from you? is this to test your faith?

    Answer:

Undoubtedly, there is great wisdom in everything Allah Ta`ala decrees for His servants. Just read the story of Khidhr and Musa (alaihimas salam) in suratul-kahf and you will come to understand that there are many reasons behind the various decrees of Allah.

May Allah Ta`ala grant us all ridhaa bil-qadhaa and true tawakkul.

  80. Abu Yahya Says:

You have read correctly… there are some “experinced/divinely-inspired du`as” of the mashayikh and azkaar which are supposed to be recited at specific occasions, in a particular manner and for a specific person. Anybody cannot just pick it up and start reading…it will not give the desired benefit.

It is like the example of over-the-counter medicine and prescription medicine.

As for Hizbul-A’zam by Mullah Ali Qari (rahimahullah)… it is a compilation of du`as from the Quran and hadith, thus anyone can read it and acquire full benefit inshallah.

In correlation to this topic at hand, Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahimahullah) has mentioned, “Undoubtedly, the most blessings and benefits are in the du`as of the Quran and Hadith. As for the duas of the mashayikh and auliya, they can never be equal to the du`as from the Quran and Sunnah.

This does not mean that they are of no benefit or wrong, it just means that the du`as taught to us directly by Allah Ta’ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) hold more precedence and priority over inspired du’as of auliya…(even though, they too are actually from Allah Ta`ala and Rasul (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).”

Also, the ijaazah that the mashayikh give for these duas are actually for barakah, effect, and just overall linkage to the author of the book or litany.

    Wallahu A`lam

    Assalam-o-alaikum
I have read somewhere that one should not recite the duas and azkar of a particular tariqa unless one has an ijaza from a sheikh of that tariqa. However, the azkar mentioned in Quran and Sunnah can be recited by all Muslims without an ijaza. I want to know, how does this relate to the daily recitations in Hizb-al-Azam, which is available in print at ordinary bookstores. Most of the duas mentioned therein are indeed from the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (May peace be upon him), but there are certain duas/azkar like the durood tanjina and some others that are from other pious people and not the Prophet (SAW). So are these wazaif published for the mureeds of the Deobandi sheikhs or can they be recited by other Muslims as well? Please advise.

Yes, we do allow people to seek spiritual consultation from us on a continuous basis either by forming an islahi ta’alluq or through bay’ah, whichever one the person is more comfortable with. If the person is not comfortable with either of the two, then too we will still try our utmost best to be of assistance.

    Wa’alaikum Assalaam,
Intermingling with the opposite gender when there is a genuine need to do so is fine provided we stay within the parameters set by the Sharia’h. Like at the grocery store or something of that sort. Also, keep in mind that yes, ideally platonic relationships are possible, but in reality there is no such thing. In our heart of hearts, we know that either we have feelings for our so-called “platonic friend” or they have feelings for us that we may be conveniently unaware of. The scene on campus is that everyone is a “brother” or a “sister” and yet these same brothers and sister pursue one another. You just say no by using himmah and doing what is right. Being curious is natural, but channel your curiosity in the proper direction. If you are really interested in someone that seems interested in you, then there are steps that can be taken, for example, have one of your male relatives look into it for you so that you yourself are not directly involved. Finally, don’t worry about offending anyone. The people who were the most pious were told not to worry about offending others who were also the most pious. What I am hinting at is that Allah told the wives of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Salaam) to keep a stern tone when conversing with the Sahabah (RA), and being offended was never an issue. Often this is an excuse our nafs presents as justification for our own weaknesess. I hope insha Allah I have adequately answered your questions. If not, then please just write back.

    Salaams!

This site is wonderful Al humdulillah! I had a question about this issue of lustful glances and the sinful acts that often follow. When the reality is that living in most places of the world and being a university student or even a regular worker, you will intermingle with men, how exactly do you tell interested men that you cannot make that leap from platonic friends to something else? I am a Muslimah
so I always end up in these situations that I am not sure how to get out of. How do you just say no? I know this seems like a silly question, but I really wonder b/c what usually happens is that I am a) afraid to back away from the situation because part of me is curious and b) I do not want to offend anyone or seem unapproachable. I know at the end of the day the only opinion of me that matters is that of Allah, but I would greatly appreciate any help with this.

There have been Khulafaa of the Chishti Silsilah who were not formal graduates of a Darul Uloom. For example : Dr. Abdul Hay Arifi comes to mind, and Khwaja Azeez-ul-Hasan Majzoob who both were senior khalifahs of Hazrat Thanwi (RA). Nonetheless, they did have the necessary knowledge of the Shari’at, which is a requisite for a Shaikh as has been stipulated by our Akaabir. I hope this helps.

  88. True Life Says:

I don’t know if this is exactly an Islahi, but are there any known Khalifahs (of any Chishti Shaikh of the past) to you who haven’t graduated from a Madrassa?

I think it’s always an Alim, because knowledge about Shariah is very important on this path, too. But maybe it’s not necessary to be an Alim… I’m just curious about this.

Maulana Mansoor-ul-Haq Sahib is also a Khalifah but he has moved back to South Africa and is no longer in the U.S.

One method of attaining khushu in salah is mentioned in an authentic hadith narrated Jamius-Saghir of Imam Suyuti wherein Sayyiduna wa Maulana Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) says: “…wa salli salata muwaddi`in…” … offer your salah like the person who is about to bid farewell to this world….

Subhanallah, this is the beauty of the Prophetic eloquence. Imagine if you are told that you are about to pass away from this world and this is your last salah. With what sincerity and concentration would you perform that salah?

This is how every salah should be and if we meditate before we start and imagine that this salah is my last one… it will inshallah increase the quality of your salaah.

  96. Nabeel Khan Says:

    Wa’alaikumu Assalaam,

Your comment consisted of some questions, each of which have different angles to them. So we will try to answer them in the order they have asked.

Q1. How do you put into practice what you learn?

A1. The best way to do this is to be in the company of those Ulamaa who make ‘amal on their ‘ilm. The second step would be to study the Targheeb and Tarheeb (Virtues and Warnings) of making ‘amal on one’s ‘ilm. Finally, as we have been told by Hazrat Thanwi (RA), that one should discuss with others the virtues and warnings regarding this. This discussion with others will push one to practice. To conclude, one has to learn, practice and propagate.

Q2. How can I purify my heart?

A2. Purification of the heart requires someone to purify it. In Arabic the word for purification is Tazkiyah. This is a transitive verb. So, it requires a Muzakki (one who purifies) and a muzakkaa (one who is purified). The best way is to establish a connection with a person who is steadfast on the Shari’ah and the Sunnah and is trained and licensed in the field of Islamic Spirituality. This is actually a very loaded question which requires great detail. So for starters, first formally connect yourself with someone who is “connected” and they will advise you what to do based on your situation and condition. Then you will see a difference within yourself and that spark will be ignited that will motivate you to carry out the Faraaidh, Waajibaat and Sunan and mustahabbaat.

If there are still some unanswered questions, then please post another comment, and we will try our best to answer them. If you have questions that are specific in nature, they can be answered via email.

    Assalamualaikum,
I was wondering if you have any tips or suggestions on how to be able to put into practice what you learn, or even very basic how can I “purify my heart” so as to speak to fulfill my obligatory acts and then of course go about committing the deeds of sunnan and nawafil?

Basically, what I am trying to ask is how is one supposed to go about making ones iman and taqwa stronger, even though yes, it comes from within, but how do you bring that spark within you to drive you to make it stronger?

  98. Mureed of Maulana Hakeem Akhtar (DB) Says:

There are two requirements for the desired (mustahab) level of trust in Allah, a) a naturally strong heart (Fitratan Quwwat ul Qalb) and b) to not have any rights of other binding on you, or those who have rights binding on you to forgo their rights.
