At the Door of the Beloved

Once during a majlis, Hazrat Fariduddin Ganj Shakar (RA) narrated this heart rendering story of Layla and Majnoon:

One day Layla had invited the poor and destitute people of the town to her house, in order to give them food. Upon hearing of this invitation, Majnoon also went to the door of Layla with his empty wooden bowl. Layla distributed food to everyone but when it came Majnoon’s turn, she turned away and went inside. When this happened, Majnoon started leaping out of ecstasy. Upon seeing this, the other poor and destitute people started telling Majnoon, “she has ignored you; this is nothing to be joyous about!” To this Majnoon replied, “Yes, yes, she indeed did not give me anything, but this is a testimony to the fact that she has at least recognized Majnoon!”

Upon relating this, Hazrat Fariduddin (RA) took a deep sigh and said, “Oh Dervishes* (ascetics)! Only they understand this talk, who are drowned in the ocean of love!”

Then he went on to say, “Oh Dervishes (ascetics)! Those who make claims of passion and love, they should hold on to the doorstep of the Beloved with their life! Once a time will come when the door of the Beloved will open and your objectives will be achieved!”

Rahat al-Quloob: A book compiled by Hazrat Khawaja Nizamuddin Awliya (RA) containing the malfoozat of his Shaykh, Hazrat Fariduddin Ganj Shakar (RA).

* Not to be confused with the whirling dervishes.

The Mashaaikh of the Chishtiyah Tareeqah have placed great emphasis on traversing this path of Sulook through divine love. It has been reported from the Mashaaikh that the way of the Chishti Tareeqah is to throw all spiritual aspirants into the flowing river of divine love. Those that traverse the path and cross to the other side have reached the destination, while those who drown therein are said to have become martyrs in this path of love.

SubhanAllah! I pray that Allah Ta’ala allows us all to become His ardent lovers.

Aameen.
