Protecting the Gaze

The harms of evil glances are so numerous that sometimes one’s deen and dunya are both destroyed. The causes of this spiritual disease are spreading rapidly. Accordingly, it seems appropriate to write down some of its harms and a brief cure in order that one refrains from the harms. Subsequently, one can protect one’s gaze by adhering to the following practices:

1. When women/men are passing by, keep the gaze low no matter how strong the urge to look may be.

2. If your gaze accidentally falls on someone, immediately lower it no matter how bad you feel and even if there is a fear of losing your life. (This is in response to people who say, “I’ll die if I don’t look.”)

3. Think that by not protecting your gaze, there is fear of disgrace in this world. The noor of obedience is snatched away and the destruction of the hereafter is certain.

4. Perform a minimum of twelve rak’ats for every evil glance and give some charity according to your means. Repent excessively.

5. Ponder over how the heart becomes ruined with the darkness of evil glances. This darkness goes away after a very long time. As long as one does not protect one’s gaze continuously even though one has the urge, the heart does not become clean.

6. Evil glances lead to inclinations, which lead to infatuation. This causes disgrace in this world and in the hereafter.

7. Evil glances gradually decrease the desire to do acts of obedience and zikr. This eventually leads to discarding these acts. Then one has an aversion for them.

May Allah protect us from this and all other evils. Aameen!
